WARREN — As the Fraser High volleyball squad walked onto the court for the first time this year Aug. 17, coach Melissa Criteser talked about the importance of the steps the team would take this season.

“With them this year, it’s really a day-by-day,” the coach said at the Macomb Area Conference Kickoff tournament at the Blue Water Sports Center. “We need to grow every time we get in the gym.”

The Fraser High boys soccer team has gotten off to a quick start under the direction of new coach Thaier Mukhtar.

The longtime Warren De La Salle coach led the Ramblers to back-to-back wins with a 4-0 season-opening victory against Utica Ford II Aug. 20 and a 4-1 defeat of St. Clair Shores Lakeview Aug. 21 to improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Macomb Area Conference White Division.

“It was a really nice start,” Mukhtar said Aug. 22. “The first game Monday against Ford — they’re really talented — we came out pretty fired up.”

DETROIT — Utica Eisenhower rolled past Port Huron High 35-14 Aug. 25 to earn its first victory for new coach Chris Smith.

Running back Shane King found the end zone three times and receiver Dan Chmielewski caught a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Joe Zerafa as Ike kicked off the year with a big win over the Big Reds at the Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University.

“It was a lot of fun for our first game,” Smith said. “I’ve got great coaches around me, a great team, so it makes it really easy.”

WARREN — As the volleyball season gets fully under way, teams across the county and state have various goals in mind.

At Utica High, the Chieftains talked about a big one at the Aug. 17 Macomb Area Conference Kickoff tournament at the Blue Water Sports Center.

“We want to change the perception of Utica volleyball,” coach Jeff LaPratt said. “We’re better than what people think we are. Last year was a big improvement for Utica, and we want to continue to improve again.”

That’s what’ll be taking place Aug. 11 at The Palace of Auburn Hills when many of the state’s top recently graduated senior basketball players will clash in the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan All-Star Festival.

The annual event, taking place for the 33rd time and second straight year at the home of the Detroit Pistons, pits players against each other in four games and also includes a 3-point shootout and dunk contest.

Soccer powerhouse Warren De La Salle has found its next varsity coach in Reid Friedrichs.

“I’m real excited,” Friedrichs said.

The coach comes with plenty of experience, most recently heading up the varsity boys at Livonia Churchill for the past 13 years, accumulating a 151-89-25 record in the process.

And he comes with plenty of knowledge of what he’s getting into taking over the Pilots’ program, which has won five state titles since 1990.

Utica Community Schools Athletic Director Robin Dilday was recently honored for his years of service as the Michigan High School Athletic Association bestowed its Allen W. Bush Award upon him.

The award is given annually to an administrator, coach, official, trainer, doctor or member of the media who has at least 15 years of experience in Michigan interscholastic athletics with unusually frequent and significant contributions to the MHSAA. Allen W. Bush was a director with the MHSAA from 1960 to 1978.
