BLOOMFIELD HILLS — On Nov. 12, the Women’s Association of Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan is welcoming the community to celebrate at its 28th annual In Celebration Dinner.

The Women’s Association consists of 200 local volunteers who support and advance the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs. They assist in securing resources to provide ongoing educational and cultural opportunities for young people served by the clubs.

Plans for the original development came to a screeching halt years ago due to a decline in the economy, and the property has sat deserted since 2008.

BEVERLY HILLS — On Oct. 26, residents of Beverly Hills will have a chance to get their spook on at the annual Halloween Hoot.

Parents are invited to bring their little boys and ghouls to Beverly Park 10 a.m.-noon and again 6-8 p.m. for oodles of Halloween fun.

The event — which typically attracts between 1,000 and 2,000 children — includes  pumpkin carving, stories by an open fire, cider, doughnuts, trick-or-treating and a visit from Creepy Clyde.

BEVERLY HILLS — Earlier this month, Detroit Country Day School announced the five new members who will sit on its Board of Trustees.

Included on the list is General Motors CEO Mary Barra.

“We’ve been a part of Detroit Country Day for many years, so it’s an honor to be asked to help the school continue to evolve and grow in our community,” Barra said in a statement released through the school’s public relations.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — Bloomfield Township is welcoming residents from neighboring communities to its annual open house event noon-4 p.m. Oct. 12.

The event is held yearly in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, and festivities are planned for all ages.

“The open house is one of the township’s biggest and nicest events, and it continues to grow each year,” said Greg Kowalski, director of community relations for Bloomfield Township.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — The Bloomfield Township Police Department has arrested Bart Mitchell Spencer, 45, of Wayne, in the death of 77-year-old William Whitelaw, of Bloomfield Township.

Whitelaw was found dead at his home in the 6000 block of Maple Hills Drive, in the area of Maple and Inkster roads, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

The Bloomfield Township Public Library is seeking 0.541 mills for the next 10 years.

The Library Board of Trustees decided to seek the tax increase to improve, staff, equip and operate the library.
