Woman dies in Shelby Township vehicle fire

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A driver died Aug. 7 in Shelby Township after her vehicle caught fire on M-53.

According to the Shelby Township Police Department, officers and the Shelby Township Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire at 10:54 p.m. Aug. 7. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames on northbound M-53, just south of 23 Mile Road, when first responders arrived.

The vehicle involved was a GMC Envoy registered in Clinton Township, and the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. Police were not releasing the driver’s name as of Aug. 8, as they were in the process of notifying the family.

The investigation of the incident caused a temporary closure to northbound M-53. Any witnesses, or anyone with information relevant to the incident, should contact the Shelby Township Police Department at (586) 731-2121, ext. 470, and ask for traffic investigator Scott Phelps.
