TROY — Troy police arrested a man they say answered two Craigslist ads for iPhones for sale, shorted one seller and took the phone from the second seller and ran away without paying.

Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond said the man agreed to meet the first seller at the McDonald’s at 36895 Dequindre Road just after 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 to purchase an iPhone 6 for $675.

According to reports, the seller gave the man the phone, and the man gave the seller an envelope with money.

The suspect left the scene, and the seller counted the money and discovered that there was only $23 in the envelope, according to reports.

A man told police that he went to the Citgo gas station at 1654 Livernois Road at 8:45 p.m. Feb. 17 after placing an ad on Craigslist to sell his iPhone 6 for $690.

The buyer reportedly asked to examine the phone, and the man gave it to him. Redmond said the suspect ran away with the phone without paying, and police believe the suspect is the same man who was involved in the Feb. 15 incident.

According to reports, police searched the area and found the suspect in his vehicle. He allegedly drove away from officers, but police stopped him and arrested him. Charges are pending.

Redmond urged anyone buying or selling items on Craigslist to use the Troy Police Department parking lot or lobby as a safe zone.

“The doors (to police headquarters) are open all the time,” Redmond said.

Redmond added that the police dispatch center overlooks the police parking lot, and there are security cameras in the lot.

“We’re centrally located,” he said. “If you have any twinge (of fear), come in. Why go somewhere else?”
