Summer clearance season can serve up hot dealership deals

Following the course of the calendar, local dealerships’ summer clearance season typically marks the transition of “out with the old, in with the new” as far as vehicle models are concerned.

According to some local auto dealers, many dealerships start trying to move the current model year’s inventory in the summer in order to make room for the next year’s model. In this case, that means selling off the 2015 models in anticipation of the arrival of 2016 ones.

That means car shoppers might be able to score a deal on a current-year model if they act quickly.

According to Dan Dilay, salesman at Hamilton Chevrolet in Warren, his dealership is currently in a summer clearance period. He said he has never seen better payment options on vehicle models across the board.

Dilay said some of the models that are ripe for deals and rebates include the Chevrolet Equinox, Cruze, Malibu, Silverado and Traverse.

“It’s July, so as I said, the heat is on,” he said. “It’s like cleaning your house …open the door and clear the floor. The ’16s are going to be coming up soon. We’re trying to get everything  ’15 out of there that we can.”

The wide range of models that are featured in the clearance means that customers looking for a particular size of vehicle are in luck, he explained.

“We leave that up to the customer,” he said. “If someone wants a small car, they can get it. If someone wants a truck, they can get it. Across the board, everything is a good thing to look at.”

Dilay said people who are interested in buying a vehicle during this season should be prepared to take one home that day. If they have a trade-in vehicle, they should take that vehicle along, he said.

Mike Long, manager at Royal Oak Ford, said “business is extremely good right now.” Although he said he expects his dealership to have its clearance time more around August, he said the period isn’t always sharply defined.

“We’ve got ’16 models on the ground already,” he said, citing the Ford Fusion.

“The situation with the model year changeover, it’s not always the same every clearance year because of different factors. … We will continue to build the ’15 model year of the F-150 product probably more closely toward the end of the year, along with Edge and Flex and some other products.”
