SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Residents can come out and celebrate the beginning of summer at the first Shelby Township Summer Kickoff event May 30.

Shelby Township and the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce will host their first summer kickoff event 4:30-9 p.m. May 30 at the Shelby Township Community Center, located at 51670 Van Dyke Ave., behind the library.

Melanie Davis, the president and CEO of the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce, said that the event is different than the events that Shelby Township has had before, because it is bigger and offers a wide range of activities and food for the community to enjoy.

“Shelby has had fireworks and food truck events in the past, but this is the first year that Shelby Township and the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce have partnered to bring an expanded and amplified summer kickoff event to the community,” Davis said in an email.

“We decided to partner in order to provide residents a fun activity to kick off the summer season, while also showcasing some area businesses including food trucks, and other vendors who will be providing family-friendly activities and more,” said Davis.

The free event will feature a 40-foot screen to play a movie. In a vote, the community chose the movie “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” which will play from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the event.

“To properly showcase all of the fun Shelby Township offers throughout the summer, we had to use a 40-foot screen, so it was only natural to have a movie night to kick off our summer,” Shelby Township Media Relations Director Brad Bates said in an email.

Davis said that there will be a parking lot full of nearly a dozen food trucks, live music provided by 99.5 WYCD, and other activities on the grassy field behind the parking lot.

She said there will be a variety of activities at each vendor table.

“All of our sponsors/vendor tables are encouraged to provide family-friendly activities that are targeted toward children. Many of our vendors in the past have given away free samples, provided face painting and other fun activities for the kids,” said Davis.

Davis said they are expecting several hundred, if not thousands, of people to come out and enjoy the summer kickoff.

She also said that people will have tons of fun things to look forward to at the event that everyone can do.

“People should look forward to some really interesting and unique menu items from our nearly dozen food trucks that will be on-site. We will also have a food truck that is providing free ice cream, courtesy of Michigan Dairy Farm Families,” said Davis.

Davis said that the chamber is happy to be partnering with Shelby Township to provide an expanded, fun, family-friendly event for the community, and to be able to include local businesses in the mix.

“The Sterling Heights Regional Chamber is thrilled to be able to partner with Shelby Township this year on this amplified summer kickoff for the community. We look forward to this opportunity to provide a family-friendly activity to the residents, as well as give our member businesses an opportunity to showcase what they offer to the community and to really engage with residents,” said Davis.
