ST. CLAIR SHORES — A 39-year-old Warren man is a suspect in a gas station break-in from January.

St. Clair Shores police released surveillance video of the Citgo gas station at 32301 Jefferson Ave. from 6:13 a.m. Jan. 27, looking for a man seen on camera throwing a hammer through the door of the closed business. The man then allegedly took chewing tobacco and Newport cigarettes and drove away in a silver or gray Chrysler Town & Country.

Police released the video and still images Feb. 7 to local news outlets and on the St. Clair Shores Police Department Facebook page. On Feb. 10, they said they had identified a suspect.

Detective Lt. James Fraser said that the suspect was identified following a credible tip from the Facebook post.

“The St. Clair Shores Police Department would like to recognize and thank the public, who are oftentimes our best partner, for their quick response to our request seeking information on this incident,” he said in an email.

As of Feb. 13, the department had obtained a warrant for the man’s arrest, but he was currently in the custody of the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Fraser said the department was letting the “process follow through,” and that the man would be arraigned in St. Clair Shores when he was available.
