St. Clair Shores police investigating thefts from unlocked vehicles

ST. CLAIR SHORES — St. Clair Shores police are warning residents to lock their vehicles at night after a spate of thefts from unlocked vehicles on several city streets May 8-11.

“We urge residents to keep their car doors locked,” said Detective Jennifer Spangler. “The best way to protect yourself is to lock your doors.”

Overnight May 8-9, there were about six police reports made from residents on Bon Heur Street, Bon Brae Street and Sunnydale Street of someone going through unlocked vehicles and taking miscellaneous change, a jacket, sunglasses and a GPS unit. Spangler said there were other incidents that night as well, but not every resident filed a formal police report.

“We have a couple videos that have come in from residents,” she said.

In those videos, Spangler said, the subject appears to be driving a newer black Jeep Cherokee type vehicle. There was no damage done to any of the vehicles that were entered that night.

On Elba Street overnight May 10-11, a different vehicle is reported to have been connected with the thefts: a silver or light-colored, smaller SUV.

Spangler said that at least two vehicles were entered that night, as well as an unlocked garage.

Most of the thefts occurred between 4 and 5 a.m., Spangler said.

If residents have any information about the suspect vehicles, they are encouraged to call the detective bureau at (586) 445-5305. To report suspicious activity, call 911 or the front desk at (586) 445-5300.
