SOUTHFIELD — The temperatures are falling, the holiday season is nearing and the Southfield Goodfellows are still taking donations for their annual drive.

The Southfield Goodfellows are an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. According to their website, their main goal is to ensure no child in Southfield or Lathrup Village goes without the essentials during the holiday season.

Giving has been a little different this year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of the usual food, clothes and gifts that would be provided, the organization is asking for monetary donations.

The money will be given to pre-approved families, and the organization is asking for donations to be in by Oct. 29.

To make a monetary donation, visit www.southfieldgoodfellows.org, leave a message on the Goodfellows 24-hour voicemail at (248) 788-5899 or make a check or money order payable to Southfield Goodfellows and mail to P.O. Box 2336, Southfield, MI 48037-2336.

“Distribution day is always a fun day,” Southfield Goodfellows Vice President MaryAnn O’Rourke said. “The gratitude from them is wonderful. They just wouldn’t have a good Christmas without it.”

With the pandemic still hitting the country, the families’ needs are even higher. The goal for the Goodfellows is to reach $62,000.

Southfield Goodfellows President Iris Johnson believes that goal is reachable, but there is a long way to go before hitting that mark. She said the organization was at around $4,000 as of Oct. 8.

Her goal is to ensure that all families have the opportunity to have a great experience during the holiday season, especially with all that has happened in 2020.

“We’re having some challenges in getting those types of donations so that we can be able to serve the community as we have in the past,” Johnson said. “The bulk of what we do is for the children, and we’re a little concerned about the donations that we’ve received so far in order to be able to give them the monetary (gift) comparable to what they have in the past.”

The Goodfellows are asking for anyone who can provide to donate so that others can have a joyous holiday season.

Whether the donation is $1 or $1,000, the goal of $62,000 is reachable with multiple donations, and the volunteers are grateful for anyone who is able to provide, they said.

“We realized we still have to be able to serve the community, but we’ve got to do it a different way to keep everybody involved safe,” Johnson said. “We’re appreciative of any size donation so that we can help these families in their time of need.”
