SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Police Department, 52530 Van Dyke Ave., will welcome the community to its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25.

Sgt. Mark Benedettini said that it has been some years since the department held an open house.

“Due to COVID and our building expansion, we have been unable to host an open house in a few years, so I’m definitely excited that we are going to be able to host an open house for the residents and business owners of Shelby Township to come out and join us at this event,” he said.

Benedettini said there will be fun activities for the whole family.

“We will have our K-9s there (Morpheus and Niko), and they will be doing demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. We will also have our drone unit doing drone demonstrations, and the Shelby Township Tactical Response Unit will also be there showing people the equipment that they use,” he said.

The open house will include a tour with a close-up look at the department and how the work is done day to day.

“This will be a fun, family-friendly event that will give people an inside look at our newly expanded Police Department, as well as an inside look at our police vehicles and equipment that we use on a daily basis,” he said.

There will also be bounce houses for the kids, and also free food and free prizes that will be given away, compliments of Utica Van Dyke Towing.

Lt. Brandon Dowty, who is part of the Community Services Unit/Tactical Response Unit at the Shelby Township Police Department, said officers are looking forward to having the community visit to learn about what they do.

“We love serving our community and acknowledge the value of showing what services we have to offer, as well as answer any questions. The open house has been a great opportunity for our officers to build relationships within the community. We are excited to continue this family-oriented event,” he said.
