CLINTON TOWNSHIP/SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Clinton Township Police Department issued a press release Sept. 4 stating that a 34-year-old woman was the victim of a recent attempted sexual assault.

Clinton Township Police Capt. Richard Maierle said the alleged assault occurred at about 8:35 a.m. Sept. 2 on the track at Chippewa Valley High School, 18300 19 Mile Road in Clinton Township.

Maierle said the victim was by herself at the time of the attack. There were no reported witnesses. The suspect allegedly pushed the victim onto the ground of the track, but the sexual assault attempt was unsuccessful.

“She had been jogging down Romeo Plank, and it looked like (the suspect) followed her,” Maierle said. “It looked like he potentially followed her onto the track.”

The suspect was described as a black man between 20 and 30 years old, 6 feet 3 inches tall, with short, unkempt Afro-style hair.

The suspect’s vehicle, captured by a nearby business surveillance camera, is believed to be a silver Ford Escape between the years 2001 and 2006. The vehicle has dark-colored rubber trim along the bottom.

On Sept. 7, Maierle said that detectives from the Shelby Township Police Department were in contact with Clinton Township police due to the possibility of the same suspect potentially committing the same acts in Shelby Township.

He said that according to Shelby Township detectives, a suspect allegedly reached inside a victim’s vehicle and exposed himself on 22 Mile Road. The suspect’s vehicle description was described as either a Jeep or a Ford Escape, the latter of which is the vehicle police believe to be involved in the assault at CVHS.

“We kind of got a match,” Maierle said. “The silver cars sort of match; the descriptions sort of match. (Shelby Township police) got a partial plate.”

On Sept. 4, Chippewa Valley Schools Superintendent Ron Roberts sent letters to district parents to warn them about the incident.
