MOUNT CLEMENS — The 27th annual Senior Fun Fest is coming back to give metro Detroit seniors valuable tips on staying healthy and active.

The Senior Fun Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 20 at the Gibraltar Trade Center in Mount Clemens.

The event, organized each year by Macomb Community Action’s Office of Senior Services, will offer a variety of free health screenings, fitness demonstrations, wellness activities, cooking demonstrations and community resource providers, combined with entertainment including live music and bingo.

“The Senior Fun Fest provides older adults and their families an ideal opportunity to find resources so they can remain independent in their homes,” said Katherine Benford, division director at Macomb Community Action.

Organizers said more than 1,000 seniors took advantage of last year’s event, which was attended by more than 100 vendors.

This year’s special activities include:

• DIA Away, a free, mobile, interactive, 53-foot trailer from the Detroit Institute of Arts that provides educational and hands-on art experiences throughout the tri-county area.

• Chair yoga, which deepens flexibility and strengthens personal body awareness.

• A prescription drug disposal service, where visitors can drop off expired or unneeded prescriptions for safe disposal. All drugs will be accepted except needles.

• On-site shredding in the parking lot for safe disposal of confidential information to prevent fraud and identity theft. There is a two-box limit.

• A painting class.

• Live entertainment by the Tommy James Orchestra.

“The Senior Fun Fest is such an exciting and well-attended event,” said L’Nora Bieske, who has participated in the event through the Bariatric Surgery Institute from McLaren Macomb Hospital for the past three years. “It’s a way we can share helpful information to our community.”

There will also be a raffle and door prizes.

Parking and entry to the event are free, and concession food will be available on-site.

Gibraltar Trade Center is located at 237 N. River Road in Mount Clemens.
