SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Shelby Township will be honoring veterans with its sixth annual Shelby Township Running with Heroes Veterans Memorial Run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Shelby Township municipal campus, 52700 Van Dyke Ave. in Shelby Township.

The Running with Heroes 5K run/walk will help support the Veterans Memorial located on the Shelby Township municipal campus.

All veterans can participate in the run/walk for free.

The course will do a double loop around the Shelby Township grounds, including Mae Stecker Park and the lake. It will finish near the Veterans Memorial.

There will be trophies awarded to the top overall male/female, master male/female and grandmaster finishers.

“My favorite part of the annual Shelby Township Running with Heroes Veterans Memorial 5K is seeing the veterans interacting with other runners and being able to see how much our community supports its veterans and military families. It’s a great cause to support the Veterans Memorial, but it’s even more rewarding to be able to walk up to a veteran and thank him or her for their service,” said Brad Bates, the Shelby Township community relations director.

The running course is 100 percent handicapped-accessible.

Check-in will begin at 8 a.m., and the race will start at 10 a.m.

Registration costs $20 until Nov. 10 or $25 on the day of the event.

Registration is available online at  eastsideracing.enmotive.com/events/register/shelby-town ship-veterans-memorial-run, and the registration form can also be downloaded from the event page and at www.shelbytwp.org, and mailed with payment to the Shelby Township Supervisor’s Office.

All proceeds from the run will benefit the Shelby Township Veterans Memorial.

A Veterans Day celebration will follow immediately after the 5K from noon to 3 p.m.

“Both events are a great way for our township residents and surrounding community members to interact with the veteran community we pride ourselves on here in Shelby Township,” said Chelsea Oland, the Shelby Township deputy supervisor, in an email.

“As many know, we take great care in giving back to our veterans and honoring them whenever possible, and as always, it’s wonderful to see the public caring as much as we do,” stated Oland.
