The annual Run the Plank 5K run/walk, scheduled for June 27 in Macomb Township, has been canceled due to COVID-19. The decision was announced April 8.

“Since our inception in 2012, we have valued all of our sponsors and vendors,” a press release states. “Whether you donated cash, gift cards, coupons or volunteered to help us out, you have been a friend to us and a great partner that has helped us make our annual Run the Plank 5K run/walk one of the biggest and most successful events in the Macomb Township community.”

Over the last eight years thanks to the race, close to $300,000 has been donated to area nonprofits. The race is a combined effort between Macomb Township church’s Immanuel Lutheran, St. Peter Lutheran and St. Isidore Catholic.

The first year saw 900 runners raise $20,000, while about 1,400 runners raised $36,750 for five local charities in 2018.

“As you know, we are currently dealing with a volatile and unpredictable virus that has hit all of us in many different ways,” the release indicates. “In order to ensure the health and safety of all of our race participants, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and spectators, the Run the Plank Committee has made a business decision to cancel the event.”

Since there is no race this summer, the committee will work on redesigning the website, with a new look and easier access.

The 2021 race is scheduled for Saturday, June 26.
