Rochester businesses to give away four shopping sprees

ROCHESTER — Those looking for an excuse to shop in downtown Rochester this month can get some retail therapy while earning a chance to win one of four downtown shopping sprees.

The Rochester Downtown Development Authority is hosting its fourth annual Mad Money March event, which DDA Events Coordinator Stephanie Hellebuyck said is an incentive to spend dollars in downtown Rochester by entering people in a drawing for a chance to win a $1,000, a $500, or one of two $250 shopping sprees.

“Typically it is cold in March, and it’s not really a big shopping month, so we just like to add that little extra incentive for people to come downtown,” Hellebuyck said.

To qualify for entry into the drawings, patrons must spend at least $100 combined at one or more of the 38 participating businesses anytime in March. Customers will be allowed one entry for every $100 spent through March 31, and the four winners will be notified April 3. Whoever wins must spend their gift certificate at participating merchants.

Kim Cooke, who owns Green’s Art Supply with her husband, Kevin, hopes shoppers come downtown to shop local during the promotion.

“We always want to encourage buying local, and if you haven’t been to Rochester in a while, it is a good opportunity to check out all the new stores and the new parking garages,” she said.

Although $100 may sound like a lot to some, Hellebuyck said it really isn’t that much when you add up what you spend in a month.

“It doesn’t have to be at one place — it can be collectively at the participating businesses — so if you have lunch one day at Penny Black, and you have to go pick up a birthday gift for someone ... all you have to do is spend $100 collectively over the course of a month,” she explained.

Patrons must bring their receipts to one of three locations to be validated — the DDA office, 308 1/2 S. Main St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays; Fieldstone Winery, 223 S. Main St., during business hours Tuesdays-Sundays; or South Street Skateshop, 410 S. Main St., during business hours Mondays-Sundays.
