FARMINGTON/FARMINGTON HILLS — Farmington Public Schools and St. Vincent de Paul’s annual clothing and shoe donation drive is a benefit for the community and students who benefit, said Diane Bauman, FPS director of school/community relations.

St. Vincent de Paul provides large donation bins to FPS to collect the donated items. After the donation drive, the group gives the school district gift cards to its store in Keego Harbor, which are given to FPS families in need to shop for items that they need, according to a press release.

DETROIT — The Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Solanus Casey Center in Detroit are inviting people of all faiths to join them for a prayer service encouraging peace in the community and the world.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at the St. Bonaventure Monastery Chapel at 1780 Mount Elliott St. in Detroit. Prayers will be offered, speeches will be made, and performers will sing hymns with the crowd. This is the 10th year the Capuchins have hosted such an event.

DETROIT — The Archdiocese of Detroit announced that the beatification ceremony of Father Solanus Casey will take place Saturday, Nov. 18, at Ford Field in Detroit.

The announcement that Casey would be beatified was made by Pope Francis in Rome May 4. Beatification is the penultimate step in the Roman Catholic Church’s process for sainthood. It requires verification of a life lived in accordance with Christian teaching and involvement in at least one miracle recognized by the church.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — On June 22, approximately 1,600 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the nondenominational Kensington Church’s new Clinton Township campus. The 33.1-acre property, located on Hall Road between Gratiot Avenue and Interstate 94, is expected to open in spring 2018.

The new campus will replace the temporary facility that is currently located a quarter mile south at the John R. Armstrong Performing Arts Center on Frederick Pankow Boulevard. The property was bid on in May 2014, and bidding was finalized in December of that year.

The Capuchins are a Franciscan ministry with the goal of feeding the body, nurturing the spirit and strengthening the community. Through efforts such as the Solanus Casey Center, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and the Jefferson House, they put those ideas into action.

DETROIT — On May 4, Pope Francis in Rome announced that Father Solanus Casey, the Franciscan monk and Detroit-area icon, would be beatified by the Roman Catholic Church.

Beatification marks a critical step on the road to sainthood, and the person involved is called “blessed” by God. It is a rare honor bestowed by the church, as it requires a miracle to be attributed to the individual.
