BEVERLY HILLS — New equipment will soon be installed in the Beverly Hills Public Safety Department building.

“The existing boiler needs to be replaced. The generator has exceeded its useful life,” Beverly Hills Village Manager Chris Wilson said.

Last year, the 28-year-old boiler was found to be noncompliant with state standards, and a new boiler control system was sent out to bid. Johnson Thermol Temp Inc. quoted a replacement price of $88,000.

The current generator is original to the building from 1989 and does not power the system’s fire apparatus doors. During a power outage, the doors must be manually opened, Wilson said, and as a result, the doors are left open, creating security concerns. Johnson Thermol Temp Inc. quoted a price of $44,000 for replacement.

By a unanimous vote May 7, the Beverly Hills Village Council approved a 30% deposit of $14,400 for a new generator from Johnson Thermol Temp Inc. and a 30% deposit of $26,400 for the new boiler system, with the balance of each due upon completion of installation.

Wilson said the existing boiler may have some scrap value after the unit is demolished and removed from the building.

“It has to be cut and taken out piece by piece,” he said. “It will be a good project to be completed.”

Budgeted capital funds will be used to pay for the new boiler and generator, Wilson said.

“I think it is going to be a fantastic addition and definitely something we need,” Councilwoman Racheal Hrydziuszko said.

The Beverly Hills Public Safety Department is currently accepting applications to fill several public safety officer vacancies. The duties of a Beverly Hills public safety officer include those of a police officer and a firefighter.

Applicants must have a minimum of 60 credit hours from an accredited college and be state certified. Preference will be given to applicants with both police and fire certifications.

To apply, download an application found at www.beverlyhillspolice.com or apply in person at the Beverly Hills Public Safety Department, located at 18600 W. 13 Mile Road.
