SOUTHFIELD — The Southfield Police Department is asking for the public’s help in tracking down a man in connection with a slew of crimes.

According to a news release from acting Chief Nick Loussia, at around 3:10 a.m. Nov. 20, police responded to the Exxon gas station at 20705 Southfield Road on a report of an assault and battery, and a retail fraud.

A clerk at the gas station told police she saw a man take merchandise from the shelf and place it into a bag.

“The clerk attempted to stop the suspect, but a struggle ensued,” Loussia said in the release. “The clerk was assaulted and obtained minor injuries during the confrontation.”

Police said the suspect then fled west on Eight Mile Road on foot with the stolen merchandise. He was possibly picked up by a sport utility vehicle, police said.

The suspect is described as a black man, possibly 40 to 50 years old. He was wearing a blue-and-white plaid jacket, a blue hoodie, black pants, a green baseball cap and dark shoes.

Police continue to investigate the incident. Anyone with information regarding the suspect or the incident is asked to call the Southfield Police Department at (248) 796-5500.
