SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Police reported that two bags were snatched out of shopping carts in Shelby Township earlier this month.

Shelby Township police said that one theft happened on 26 Mile Road and another happened on Hall Road. The incidents occurred three days apart.

At 10 p.m. Sept. 13, a satchel was taken from a shopping cart at Gander Mountain on Hall Road when the victim wasn’t looking. The satchel was described as black and leather.

“The contents included the victim’s cellphone, cash and credit cards,” Detective Lt. Patrick Barnard said in an email.

Police are currently investigating the incident and are looking for the thief.

In a separate incident, a purse snatching occurred at 9 a.m. Sept. 16 at Kroger at 26 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue.

An 82-year-old woman’s purse was taken from her shopping cart at the checkout line after the thief distracted her, according to police. The thief then fled and drove away in a vehicle.

Police searched the area and quickly found the suspect in the vehicle.

“We arrested him a short time later in the area with the evidence,” Shelby Township Police Capt. Jason Schmittler said in an email.

The suspect also was found to have drugs on him, according to police.

“The suspect faced numerous charges, which included possession of (drug) analogs that were found on his person at time of arrest,” Barnard said.

Police advise people to not leave their belongings unattended while in public.

“Don’t leave it in the cart or walk away. It’s too easy to get distracted. Keep it on your person,” Schmittler said.

Police said the incidents were not related.

Anyone with information on the other purse snatching can call the Shelby Township Police Department at (586) 731-2121.
