Eastpointe and Warren police have arrested a suspect who allegedly shot two people at a New Year’s Eve party in the early hours of Jan. 1.

The Eastpointe Police Department’s press release said that the party was held in the 22000 block of Melrose Court. The suspect, a 19-year-old Warren resident, had attended the party with two friends earlier in the evening.

“The (party organizer) did not know the suspect,” Eastpointe Police Lt. Dave Ernatt said. “He had a friend over at the house; they asked if they could invite a friend over. He said, ‘Yeah, no problem.’ The friend came over and brought two people with him, so two uninvited people (were) over to the house.”

After being confronted by one of the victims, a physical altercation reportedly ensued, and the suspect and his friends were asked to leave, the press release said.

The suspect allegedly returned later that evening and shot the two victims — one in the thigh and one in the abdomen — before fleeing in a black SUV. Police said that they were able to gather enough information to go to the suspect’s residence on Eastwood Street and arrest the suspect without incident. Police said that they recovered a handgun.

Both victims, 18- and 19-year-old men, are being treated at a local hospital and are expected to survive, according to the press release. Investigators plan to put together their evidence and present their case to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office Jan. 3. An arraignment could follow later that day, Ernatt said.
