Police investigate fatal crash after pursuit

A fatal early morning crash is currently under investigation, according to West Bloomfield police.

Deputy Chief Curt Lawson said in a news release that the crash occurred at around 4:15 a.m. May 8 in the area of Northwestern Highway and Orchard Lake Road.

Based on preliminary information, police believe a vehicle was traveling northbound on Northwestern Highway and struck a traffic light pole at Orchard Lake Road.

According to a news release from the Farmington Hills Police Department, at around 4:13 a.m. May 8 an officer attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation at northbound Northwestern Highway and 13 Mile roads.

The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, police said, and police terminated the pursuit. Soon after, the vehicle crashed into the traffic light pole.

Lawson said two people were in the vehicle, a man and a woman.

The man, identified by police as Matthew Lee Mercado, 36, of Waterford Township, died as a result of the crash.

Police said the woman was taken to a local hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries from the crash. Police identified her as Jazmene Shavonne Glynn, 24, of Warren.
