BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — According to investigators, it doesn’t appear that speed or alcohol were factors in a crash that killed a Bloomfield Hills man last week at Long Lake Road and Wabeek Drive.

According to a press release from Sgt. Kim Comerford, of the Bloomfield Township Police Traffic Investigations Unit, police and fire personnel responded to the scene just before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, on reports that a vehicle had struck a dump truck.

Witnesses said a 2008 Mercedes-Benz traveling southbound on Wabeek failed to yield to a 2005 Peterbilt dump truck traveling westbound on Long Lake. The vehicles collided, and the dump truck rolled on its side, striking a utility pole.

Both drivers were transported to a hospital. There, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz, a 76-year-old Bloomfield Hills man, was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the dump truck, a 51-year-old Ortonville man, was treated and released.

An investigation is ongoing by the Bloomfield Township Police Traffic Investigations Unit and members of the Southwest Oakland County Crash Investigations Team.

Comerford could not provide an update on the investigation before press time.
