WARREN — A resident escaped injury with the help of his neighbors Jan. 13 after an evening house fire near 11 Mile and Hoover roads.

Warren Fire Department Chief Tim Morgan said dispatch received a 911 call from a neighbor in the 27000 block of Roan Drive at 9:52 p.m.

“It was blowing out the front. It started in the kitchen,” Morgan said.

The homeowner is reportedly elderly and wheelchair-bound.

“The neighbors heard him yelling for help,” Morgan said. “The fire was starting to get bigger and bigger. Our guys helped him get his wheelchair off the porch. The neighbors took him in their house to look him over.”

Morgan said he’d heard that one of the neighbors tried putting the fire out with a hose.

“It was a nice try. It sounds like he has some good neighbors,” Morgan said.

It took less than 10 minutes to get the fire under control. Firefighters remained on the scene until 11:46 p.m. The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Jan. 14.

“His kids say they were cooking him dinner. They don’t remember leaving anything on. It still looks like the fire started in the kitchen somehow,” Morgan said.

Fire crews assigned to Engine 5, Rescue 4, Squad 5, Squad 2 and Quint 1 responded. No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters.

“Thankfully he was able to get himself out, at least out of the house, and that the neighbors heard him yelling,” Morgan said.
