MACOMB COUNTY — Macomb Community College officials recently announced two new scholarship programs at the school.

On June 13, General Motors launched its Dealer Technician Scholarship program, which will offer 12 scholarships.

On July 2, the Metro Health Foundation, a private Detroit grant-making foundation, awarded a $12,000 grant to Macomb Community College for nursing student scholarships.

Through the new GM program, 12 Dealer Technician Scholarships will be offered at MCC beginning with the fall 2019 semester. The scholarships will cover full tuition and fees while students earn an associate degree in automotive technology and a pathway to jobs at GM dealerships.

Along with their coursework, students will participate in paid co-op opportunities, with hands-on learning experiences led by experienced technicians at local Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealerships. This will give students exposure to several of GM’s industry-leading technologies, including battery-electric vehicles, semi-autonomous driver assistance systems and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

“We’re excited to partner with GM to create greater opportunities for our students to connect to good careers and the growing possibilities in automotive technology,” said Don Hutchinson, MCC’s dean of engineering and advanced technology.

The deadline for scholarship applications is 5 p.m. July 26. Students who receive scholarships must be enrolled full-time, maintain a grade-point average of 2.5 and complete co-op rotations at local GM dealerships or ACDelco professional service centers. MCC is one of seven community colleges in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania with which GM is partnering, providing a total of 80 GM Dealer Technician Scholarships.

The Metro Health Foundation is a private Detroit grant-making foundation that has awarded a $12,000 grant to MCC for nursing student scholarships. Through the grant, MCC officials will provide six scholarships of $2,000 for the 2019-20 academic year to full-time nursing students who maintain a 3.0 grade-point average and show they are in need of financial assistance. Over the past 21 years, the Metro Health Foundation has provided more than $188,000 to MCC for nursing scholarships.

“The Metro Health Foundation is a valued community partner helping ensure that talented and committed students are able to achieve their dream of being on the front lines of health care in Macomb County and southeast Michigan,” said Christina Ayar, director of the Macomb Community College Foundation.
