FRANKLIN — Summer: when the dull task of grocery shopping at the supermarket is transformed by taking the action outside.

Farmers markets are popping up all over metro Detroit, and Franklin residents will be the first to tell you they’ve got one of the most unique weekly open-air shopping experiences in town.

Market on the Green opened up two weeks ago, boasting more vendors than ever, with 15-20 produce, prepared foods, spice and giftware makers selling their goods under the shady canopy of Franklin Park.

Organizer John Pulker, of the Franklin Community Association, said that not only are there more vendors this year from when the market first opened three years ago, but the sellers are more unique and interesting than what you might find at similar events.

“Early on, we’ll have flowers and seedlings — all the stuff people are typically looking for. It’s too early for vegetables, but we’ll have Jeff Meyers from (Kingston, Michigan) selling stuff from his hot house,” said Pulker. “We’ve got a lot of stuff now four years later. It’s grown really nicely, and it’s going really well.”

Pulker said that among the vendors slated to appear this summer are the allergen-free Motown Freedom Bakery, a homemade pasta sauce and salsa chef, a gourmet turkey burger maker, a glass garden ornament artist, a wrought-iron furniture maker, a jewelry artist and plenty more. The vendors have been curated by Heather Adams, of the Oakland County Market.

“We have such a variety of people selling, and it’s partly because the setting is so beautiful,” said organizer Jane Polan. “It’s in Franklin Park, which is so beautiful, and parking is right there. After people go to the market, they usually take a walk around downtown Franklin, get lunch and eat at a picnic table. It’s really lovely.”

Market on the Green takes place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 25. Franklin Village Green is located on Franklin Road, north of 13 Mile Road, in downtown Franklin.
