ST. CLAIR SHORES — St. Clair Shores police are looking for a man who witnesses say attacked an 80-year-old man and stole his wallet while he was cutting his lawn.

Detective Sgt. Jay Cohoe said the 80-year-old man was sweeping up along the sidewalk outside his home in the 28000 block of Larchmont around 8:30 a.m. July 30 when a man came up from behind him and hit him on the back, forcing him to the ground.

“While he had him pinned down, he ripped his wallet out of his back shorts pocket,” Cohoe said.

But a 55-year-old St. Clair Shores woman in the area saw the attack and followed the robber when he ran to his GMC Envoy, which was parked on Grant Street.

“She did an awesome job. She followed the vehicle and tried calling 911 and was giving directions of where the vehicle was going,” Cohoe said. “She had the vehicle cornered in a dead end, (but the) suspect then drove his vehicle directly at our witness vehicle and proceeded to flee out of the area.”

The woman followed the suspect into Roseville, and he drove toward Interstate 696 from Waldorf Street. Witnesses told police that the man may have damaged his vehicle by driving over curbs to get away from her.

The suspect was described as a black man about 20-25 years of age who stood between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall. He weighed an estimated 200-220 pounds. He was wearing a plaid shirt with khaki shorts, and he drove away in a gray 2005-2009 GMC Envoy with four doors — possibly a Denali with chrome rims. The vehicle may now have damage to its tires, wheels or the front suspension.

Cohoe praised the action of the witness.

“She was fabulous,” he said. “She was literally on her way to work, saw that something was wrong, saw this man running with this gentleman’s wallet,” and decided to pursue the suspect.
