Man leads police to girlfriend’s body in Center Line apartment

CENTER LINE — The body of a 68-year-old woman was found in the bathtub of an apartment in Center Line after her boyfriend walked into the police station late on Jan. 9 and asked officers to check on her welfare.

Executive Lt. Steven Hilla of the Center Line Public Safety Department said the man, who is also 68, came into the station at about 11 p.m.

“He was requesting a welfare check, to be made at his girlfriend’s apartment, with whom he lives,” Hilla said. “After refusing to answer some questions that the officers asked, they became suspicious.”

Hilla said officers accompanied the man to the apartment in the 25000 block of Liberal Street, near 10 Mile Road and Sherwood Avenue.

“A quick search of the apartment was made and officers discovered the body,” Hilla said. “She was later identified as the girlfriend of the male, laying in the bathtub, fully clothed with knife wounds to her body.”
Once the discovery was made, Hilla said the man “turned his back to the officers he was with and placed his hands behind his back.”

The investigation remained ongoing Jan. 10. The man’s name was not released and he was taken to the Macomb County Jail pending an interim bond hearing over the weekend and a formal arraignment in the 37th District Court in Warren, likely on Jan. 13.

Hilla said the scene was processed by investigators and that some evidence was collected. Police do not believe anyone else was at the apartment at the time. No further information about the investigation was released.
