ST. CLAIR SHORES — A Clinton Township man has been charged with assault with intent to commit murder, felony firearm and assault and battery following an allegedly unprovoked incident at a local bar on Halloween night.

Police were called to Kapone’s Sports Tavern, 24301 Harper Ave., for a report of shots fired at 1:24 a.m. Nov. 1. According to a press release from the St. Clair Shores Police Department, when officers arrived, they found a group of patrons surrounding the Clinton Township man, who allegedly shot a security guard at the bar before officers made it to the scene.

The man, 26-year-old Trenell Vass Dunson, of Clinton Township, allegedly first struck a 47-year-old woman in the neck with a closed fist in an allegedly unprovoked incident. After bar security was made aware of the incident, security officers escorted Dunson outside.

Once outside, Dunson allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired a single shot at the lower portion of the security guard’s body. Dunson turned to flee and allegedly fired several more rounds before being apprehended by other bar patrons.

St. Clair Shores Police report the security guard was taken to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. Police were also able to find the weapon allegedly used in the incident.

St. Clair Shores Police Lt. James Fraser said the woman was not seriously injured. The security guard was still hospitalized as of Nov. 2, but his injuries were deemed to be not life-threatening.

Dunson was arraigned in front of 40th District Court Judge Mark Fratarcangeli Nov. 2 on charges of assault with intent to commit murder, felony firearm, and two counts of assault and battery. Bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety, and Dunson is currently being held at the Macomb County Jail pending his preliminary examination. He did not have an attorney of record listed as of press time.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to call St. Clair Shores Police Detective Paul Dlugokenski at (586) 445-5305.

This is the third serious incident to occur in recent years at or near the location. On May 30, 2018, 57-year-old Eric Hysell was involved in a fight over money on the back patio of the bar. He was punched and struck the back door when he fell; he died three days later. Andrew Werling is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the case and his trial is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2021 in Macomb County Circuit Court.

Police were also called to the bar Dec. 22, 2019, after 47-year-old Shawn Kubic was punched in the head. He died as a result of his injuries four days later. Hatum Akrawi is charged with manslaughter in the case, which is set for a pretrial conference Nov. 18 in Macomb County Circuit Court.
