Man arraigned for allegedly stealing donation jar

A man with no fixed address has been arrested and arraigned for allegedly stealing a donation jar from the Ram’s Horn at 29220 Gratiot Ave. Jan. 27.

Cory Gebhart, 28, was arraigned on a charge of larceny from a building Feb. 4 in 39th District Court. His next court date was scheduled for Feb. 17.

According to a press release from Roseville Deputy Police Chief Don Glandon, Gebhart allegedly was in the restaurant early in the morning and grabbed the jar from the cashier’s counter while exiting around 6 a.m. The donation jar was for Dort Elementary School and contained about $100, Glandon said.

Glandon said the Police Department made a post on its Facebook page about the theft, and the post generated several phone calls from people in the area who helped police find a suspect.

“We got several phone calls of who the individual was, identifying him — some tips on where we may be able to find him.” Glandon said. “We have some good citizens who decided to give us some help, and we appreciate it.”

Glandon said police were able to find Gebhart Feb. 3 and arrested him without incident, though Glandon declined to say where Gebhart was located at the time. Glandon said police on Feb. 4 recovered a jar near the restaurant that matched the description of the one stolen from Ram’s Horn, though with the money missing.

Gebhart pleaded not guilty and requested a court-appointed attorney. The court-appointed attorney had not been named at press time.
