MACOMB TOWNSHIP — The next time you visit the Macomb Township Recreation Center, you’ll be sure to notice plenty of new equipment.

On July 12, old cardiovascular equipment was switched out with over 50 pieces of the latest in fitness machines.

“Every three years, we’re fortunate enough to replace our cardiovascular equipment,” Macomb Township Parks and Recreation Facility Supervisor Gina Muszynski said. “We’re getting the latest equipment.”

Typically, the equipment is leased, but this year, Muszynski said the department purchased the equipment outright for $153,000 — a savings of $50,000 over three years by not going through a leasing company. Equipment will be bought back from three vendors at the end of three years.

The recreation center was closed from 6 p.m. July 11 until noon July 12 to make way for the new machinery.

Muszynski said that all the center’s cardiovascular equipment is electronic and takes a beating, opposed to free weights.

“Every three years, the technology gets better and, in that time, a lot has happened with developing new treadmills and octanes,” she said. “We want to keep it under warranty because it gets used so much.”

Of the former cardio equipment, around 20% wasn’t replaced.

Treadmills, ellipticals and upright and recompense bikes were among the equipment switched out. Also, a hit machine, the latest kind of incline trainer, was added.

“Because we do this every three years, it keeps us up to date with what other fitness communities have,” she said.

In December, a multi-functional training system was added at the recreation center, the MotionCage Package 5 strength equipment machine. It was purchased for $9,750, a savings of over $9,300.

The MotionCage is a series of functional training system exercise stations that can be configured in several ways to best suit any facility’s layout and needs.

Opened in 2004, the Recreation Center, located at 20699 Macomb St., is a 92,000-square-foot facility providing a wide array of recreational activities and amenities.

The recreation center is open Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To learn more, call (586) 992-2900.
