The 2018 prep football season is finally here.

Coaches, players and fans can rejoice after a 10-month absence, as hundreds of teams across the state kick the season off this week.

That includes teams all over Macomb County, which means the return of Macomb Mashups — our weekly look at some of the most intriguing matchups featuring teams from Macomb County.

In our first installment of the new season — a special early edition since the season starts on a Thursday — we start things off with a look at the reigning Division 2 state champions.

Warren De La Salle at Muskegon High — 7 p.m. Aug. 24
The Week 1 matchup features the defending D-2 (De La Salle) and D-3 (Muskegon) state champs. The Pilots won their second state title last season. The Big Reds took home a fourth crown. De La Salle is 0-2 all-time against Muskegon.

Warren Cousino at Warren Woods Tower — 7 p.m. Aug. 23
Tower won last year’s bout 31-13, but Cousino leads the series 10-9. This marks the fifth straight year the Warren schools have faced off in Week 1. Cousino averaged 20.1 points per game in 2017, while Tower allowed 15.8 points per contest. The Titans are coming off a trip to a district final.

Detroit Leadership Academy at Mount Clemens High — 7 p.m. Aug. 24
It’s a new era at Mount Clemens High, as new coach Tony Warchol takes over. The Bathers have a full slate of games for the first time since 2015 and join the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference this fall. This is the third straight year Mount Clemens and the Detroit Leadership Academy have squared off. The teams have split two meetings. Leadership Academy enters its third season as a varsity program. The Cougars started 0-7 in 2017.

St. Clair Shores South Lake at Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian — 6 p.m. Aug. 24
The Week 1 matchup marks the first meeting between South Lake and NorthPointe Christian. The Mustangs put up 32.9 points per game last season on their way to the postseason. The Cavaliers hope to bounce back after a 2-7 campaign in 2017.
