MOUNT CLEMENS — The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible counterfeit check ring that involves checks looking identical to those issued by the Sheriff’s Office itself.

According to a July 11 media release from Sgt. Renee Yax, 11 of the counterfeit checks were passed in a week’s period in Mount Clemens, Clinton Township, Shelby Township and Troy. The release states that party stores were the victims in these incidents.

Yax said such checks are issued by the Sheriff’s Office to inmates upon their release for funds taken from them when entering the jail. The counterfeit checks look almost identical to legitimate checks that would be issued to released inmates from the Macomb County Jail, with a Macomb County Sheriff’s Office logo in the upper right corner with the Sheriff’s Office address and “Inmate Funds.” The checks also include an authorized signature and a Chemical Bank logo.

The checks vary in amount from $300 to $725, and have all been dated for July 3, July 5 and July 7, according to the release. In addition, the counterfeit checks are made out to individuals who have not been incarcerated in the Macomb County Jail. The individuals cashing these checks have been able to produce photo identification for the names on the checks, and it was unknown at press time last week if the people cashing the checks were using fraudulent identification.

Yax said investigators were working on obtaining additional information as well as video surveillance.

“The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office wants business owners to be aware of these counterfeit checks so they can protect themselves from becoming a victim,” the media release reads. Yax said producing and/or passing counterfeit checks is a felony.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at (586) 307-9358.
