Looking Back: The stores along Main Street

Rochester Post | Published November 6, 2018

ROCHESTER — People gather around stores on the east side of Rochester’s Main Street, near Fourth Street, in a photo that the staff of the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm said was likely taken between 1905 and 1910.

The building on the far left is where Lytle’s Pharmacy is located today. There is a crowd in front of M.L. McNiel’s Hardware store, which is advertising a stove sale. The other two stores on the right are a barbershop and a grocery store. There is one car to the far left, along with quite a few horse buggies. Museum staff said cars would have been rare in Rochester at that time.
