Looking Back: The Barney family

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — The Barneys were among the first residents of Harrison Township to settle on one of the islands at the end of South River Road. Before those little bridges that most of us today think of as just bumps in the road, homeowners had to take a boat to do anything, be it fetching firewood, catching fish for dinner or visiting friends. Except in the winter. When the river froze over, the entrepreneurial Mrs. Barney arose early in the morning to bake fresh doughnuts to sell at her little café on the river. Food and bait and hot coffee — what else could an ice fisherman or local resident want on a freezing cold morning?
