ROCHESTER/ROCHESTER HILLS — Local leaders in Rochester and Rochester Hills will go head-to-head to see who can raise more money to fight breast cancer this month.

Rochester City Manager Blaine Wing and Rochester Hills City Councilman Ryan Deel are among 30 community leaders who were selected as Real Men Wear Pink of Oakland County ambassadors to help raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign.

Julie Featherston, community development manager for the American Cancer Society, said this is the second year for the Real Men Wear Pink of Oakland County campaign, which had 18 ambassadors last year and raised a total of $52,000 for the cause.

“We look for leaders in the community that have a platform or a passion to spread the word and create awareness for breast cancer,” she said.

Real Men Wear Pink ambassadors commit to wearing pink every day in October and compete to raise money through online fundraising and networking.

Wing said he’s thrilled to be selected as a Real Men Wear Pink ambassador because the cause is close to his heart. Growing up, Wing had a neighbor — who he said was very close with his younger sister — who battled breast cancer and died just before she turned 30.

“I’m hoping that when somebody sees me wearing some pink, they might ask me what it’s all about,” he said.

Deel announced his participation in the campaign during a recent City Council meeting.

“I’m proud to be a Real Men Wear Pink ambassador, bringing awareness and support to the fight against breast cancer,” he said. “ … I’m committed to raising funds for the American Cancer Society in the fight against breast cancer.”

Wing and Deel were each asked to raise at least $2,500 for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Oakland County Walk, which will be held Oct. 27 at Rochester Municipal Park.

The fundraising efforts will likely round up a bit of friendly competition between the neighboring municipalities.

“I’ll be doing my best to more than double the goal that they’ve set,” Wing said.

“What I’m hoping is that we in Rochester Hills can really come out in the fight against breast cancer and make a big showing, and at least show up Rochester and do a little bit better than them,” Deel added.
