DETROIT/HUNTINGTON WOODS — A local author is inviting the public to join him for a book signing to celebrate and explore the history of Detroit.

Author Paul Vachon will present “Becoming the Motor City,” published by Reedy Press, at the Huntington Woods Public Library, 26415 Scotia Road, from 6:30-7:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11. More information is available by calling (248) 543-9720.

“Well over a century ago, a cadre of self-trained mechanics, machinists, and other tradesmen started tinkering in the small, cramped machine shops near downtown Detroit,” the author wrote while promoting the book. “Despite their varied technical ideas, professional ambitions, and personal temperaments, they worked towards a common goal: to revolutionize personal transportation by capitalizing on the recently developed internal combustion engine.”

The book shares insights about how industry and the city grew, prospered, and ultimately suffered together and the author and historian examines the depths of Detroit’s automotive history. Through photos, stories, and history, he says he tries to paint a vivid picture of the city’s past.
