BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP — A book can take readers anywhere their imagination wants to go.

It’s with that in mind that Bloomfield Township Public Library staffers will attempt to take visitors on a trip around the world in one evening for the International Night at the Library fundraiser at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

The ticketed event will feature globally inspired cuisine, live music, dancing and costumes. Mark Berry, a professional caricature artist, will be on hand to provide attendees with a personalized memento of the evening. Guests can feel good knowing they had a great time for a great cause, since all of the proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships will be used to support the library’s world languages collection.

“Attendees will be able to savor delectable international cuisine provided by Two Unique Catering while taking in the sights and sounds of performers, including accordionist Michael Schaeffer, a troupe of belly dancers and the Cliff Monear Quartet,” library board President Eli Greenbaum said in a prepared statement.

Township resident Jane Kahan attended the library’s last big adult-centric event in 2014 to mark the library’s 50th anniversary. She said she wouldn’t miss another bash.

“I had a really good time, and I thought this would be something fun to do. And it’s a fundraiser for the library, and I thought that was important to support,” Kahan said.

Assistant Library Director Tera Moon said the world languages collection is already a well-used resource for patrons who want to learn another language and for non-native English speakers who want to improve their skills, but it could use a little boost.

“We’d like to add some more materials, more DVDs and audiobooks, and add to the languages we have,” she explained. “We’ve strengthened our connection to the Oakland Literacy Council, and their tutors use our space to meet with (English as a second language students), and we host English conversation groups here.”

Tickets cost $50 in advance and can be purchased at the library’s circulation desk or at Tickets will cost $75 at the door the night of the event.
