Learn mindful meditation at Troy library

Go within to find your true self and become more focused, effective, joyful and happy, and learn the practice of meditation at the Troy Public Library during a four-part series in November and December.

All you need is a chair.

This is the second time James Joseph and Anjani Tiwari have presented the meditation program at the library.

“We had this program last year, and it was very popular,” said Margaret Forrest, adult information librarian. “Today, people are under so much stress. Stress can do a lot of damage to your body. I wanted to present another tool for people to help reduce stress.”

Joseph, who works as vice president at HTC Global Services in Troy, said he’s been practicing meditation for 25 years.

“It’s transformed my life beyond my expectations. It transforms you from within. It makes you go inward to find your true self,” Joseph said. “It allows you to clear space between you and your reactions, gives you more empathy, and increases concentration and focus.”

Meditation, he said, “allows us to remove all that is blocking us to find your true nature, which is calm, loving, kind, cooperative and collaborative.”

He said it has allowed him to have good relationships with his wife, business associates and customers.

Joseph said participants must be 16 or older to make the life choice to meditate.

“Parents can’t make that decision,” he said.

He said the class will cover all aspects of meditation in each session, because they understand that people may be unable to attend all four sessions.

After each session, they will ask participants to meditate each day for 20 minutes.

“It takes 21 days to get into a new paradigm,” Joseph said.

After four weeks, participants who are truly serious will have completed 500 minutes of meditation, Joseph said. “It will really put them at a really good place to continue it as a life practice.”

He said they plan to spend time in the sessions in actual meditation.

The biggest roadblock to meditation is becoming much more aware of thoughts, which can include fear and anxiety, Joseph said.

“Typically, that’s what makes it hard to start.”

He said their technique teaches people to connect with their heart and to ignore their thoughts.

“Thoughts are the biggest roadblock in addition to the perception that we don’t have time,” he said.

He stressed that meditation does not conflict with any religious beliefs, but “enhances your inner search.”

A 10-minute guided relaxation technique will also be part of the programs.

And it’s free.

He said HTC Global Services, 3270 W. Big Beaver Road, has a meditation room with no religious affiliation that’s open to the public free of charge during normal business hours.

“Somebody taught me free of cost,” Joseph said. “So we give it back to society. One person meditating in a family or office can make a huge difference and affect the whole organization.”

Learn to Meditate: Heartfulness Meditation will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 16, 23 and 30, and Dec. 7. Registration is required. People can register for all sessions or individual sessions.
