GROSSE POINTE WOODS/ST. CLAIR SHORES — One month after the Lake Front Park Aquatic Facility opened for the summer, city officials had to close it down after a pool lifeguard tested positive for COVID-19.

City officials closed the pool at 5 p.m. Aug. 5 to allow further investigation and analysis of the situation. Lake Front Park is located on Jefferson Avenue in St. Clair Shores, but is owned by Grosse Pointe Woods.

According to an email interview with Grosse Pointe Woods City Administrator Bruce Smith, the lifeguard tested positive July 31. His last day of work prior to the positive test had been July 26.

“The lifeguard was having symptoms and went for testing,” Smith said. “Symptoms appeared several days after his last workday.”

All the aquatics staff members were notified Aug. 5 of the lifeguard’s positive test. An e-blast communication was sent out to residents as well to inform them of the matter. In addition, city officials were in contact with the Macomb County Health Department and were following recommendations regarding testing of the pool staff.

On Aug. 7, city officials sent an e-blast to inform residents that the investigation had concluded, and that there was no exposure to residents or city personnel at the pool.

“At this time, there is no indication that any other employees or the public have been infected,” the e-blast states. “While it was determined no exposure happened at the aquatic facility, precautions are being taken and the aquatic facility will be disinfected by an outside contractor.”

After much discussion earlier this summer, the Grosse Pointe Woods City Council voted to open the pool July 1. The pool reopening plan came with several restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents also were reminded that anyone using the pool would do so at their own risk.

While the pool is closed until further notice, Lake Front Park will remain open. City officials will keep residents updated on the matter through e-blast notifications.

“The reopening of the pool has yet to be determined,” Smith said.

At press time, the Lake Front Park Aquatic Facility remained closed. More information regarding the pool reopening was to be released Aug. 11 in the “Grosse Pointe Woods Happenings” newsletter.
