A Troy family returned to their second-floor Charter Square apartment, near Big Beaver and Livernois, at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 after going out to dinner to find their apartment on fire.

Fire officials said a man had been cooking on his electric stove top when the power went out. He told firefighters he turned the stove off and took his family out to dinner. While they were gone, the power was restored.

Firefighters received a report of a fire, and arrived to the two-story, 32-tenant apartment building to discover smoke and fire showing from the kitchen of the apartment, said Troy Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Riesterer.

Everyone safely evacuated, according to reports.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the apartment of origin and had spread into the attic space above, Riesterer said.

Seven of the eight units in the section of the building involved in the fire were occupied, and those residents have been temporarily displaced due to smoke damage in those units, Riesterer said.

Damage estimates were not available. Nobody was hurt. Troy building and fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.
