SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A local pantry in Shelby Township is looking to the community for some assistance in the donation of supplies to help those in need. The pantry will also be hosting a fundraiser in hopes of purchasing more supplies.

A local group called Woman’s Life Chapter 911 put together the pantry for hygiene necessities for use by the local community.

The chapter opened the pantry to the public during the first week of February.

The pantry was closed during the quarantine for safety, so the group is looking for help to restock.

The pantry is located in a suite at 22 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue and is open by appointment to Shelby Township and Utica residents, in addition to residents of surrounding communities.

Lynn Karnes, the Woman’s Life Chapter 911 president, said that the pantry has reopened and volunteers are looking forward to helping others with any items they may need and appreciate any help they can receive from the community.

“The Woman’s Life Hygiene Pantry reopened in June after the stay-at-home order lifted. We have seen about 35-40 families come in each month since reopening. The community had an instrumental part in filling our pantry with hygiene products, such as shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, liquid hand soap, dish soap, laundry soap, dryer sheets and more. We are currently holding virtual fundraisers to be able to purchase much-needed supplies,” said Karnes.

Currently, the group is running low on supplies, other than a few items on the shelves in the mostly empty pantry.

Woman’s Life Chapter 911 is collecting a variety of hygiene products to stock the pantry. Anyone can donate items they do not need.

When the pantry is open, in order to get supplies, a person will be required to make an appointment and to provide some information about themselves and why they need the supplies.

Those interested can contact Karnes at (586) 604-6907 or by emailing WL 911macombangels@gmail.com for open pantry days.

The chapter is also hosting a meat raffle fundraiser to raise money to help purchase items.

Woman’s Life Chapter 911 and Neighbors United, a nonprofit organization that also helps those in need, will be hosting this final Virtual Meat Raffle for 2020. It will take place online from 5 to 6 p.m. Oct. 24. The group will be raffling off 100 New York strip steaks, 10-12 ounces, from Nitsches Meat Market. There will be 50 chances to win for $10 or 150 chances for $20. The pickup date for the steaks will be Oct. 25.

Raffle participants will receive their tickets and the numbers on the tickets in an email once they pay.

Tickets for the final meat raffle can be purchased via PayPal, Venmo, mailing a check or by calling Karnes at (586) 604-6907.

Connie MacDougall, of Macomb Township, said she is proud to be a part of both groups.

“I met Joe Warne and began working … with him after he helped a family member during a health issue. Neighbors United assists so many families, individuals and groups. Through Joe, I met Lynn Karnes and joined WL Chapter 911 Macomb Angels. She and others also provide funds and other things to those in need,” she said.

She said that being part of these groups gives her many things to smile about, knowing many people are willing to help others.

“Being a part of both of these groups warms my heart. It’s truly amazing how many good and caring people there are in the world. It’s an honor to be associated with both of these nonprofits,” said MacDougall.
