HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A 69-year-old man is dead after an apartment fire at the Beechwood Townhomes in Harrison Township on May 26.

According to Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Renee Yax, deputies and the Harrison Township Fire Department were called to the apartment community, located at North Pointe Parkway and Metropolitan Parkway, at 8:40 p.m. that evening.

At the scene, emergency personnel observed flames and heavy smoke coming from one of the apartments. Deputies were approached by a man who stated that his father, Christian Majewski, was still in the apartment that was on fire.

The report states that Majewski had to be extracted by the Fire Department and was transported to the hospital, where he died from his injuries on May 27.

Officials said the victim’s son, 41, was cooking when a grease fire erupted. When he was unsuccessful at extinguishing the fire, he alerted his father of the fire and then exited to alert his neighbors.

When the man realized that his father had not exited the apartment, he re-entered in an 6attempt to locate him, but was unsuccessful due to the smoke and flames. Yax reported that the son was also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at press time.

Firefighter/paramedic Matthew Czarnecki said the fire was contained to the one unit, and Beechwood management verified that no other units were damaged.

At press time, the Sheriff’s Office was investigating the fire, and it was not believed that foul play was involved, according to Yax.
