HARPER WOODS — Members of the Friends of the Harper Woods Public Library are inviting the public to join them for the organization’s annual fall book sale.

The book sale will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13, and will be hosted in the lower level of the library, which is located at 19601 Harper Ave. in Harper Woods.

“It’s a little later this year than usual,” said Mary Kingston, the president of the Friends of the Harper Woods Public Library. “We’ve gotten a lot of good donations. We have some great hardcover books, paperbacks, music, movies. We have a lot of John Grisham, Danielle Steel, Stephen King and a lot of other popular authors.”

Library officials love working with the Friends of the Harper Woods Public Library, and they say its work is beneficial both to the library and its patrons.

“We’re excited that the Friends are hosting another book sale,” Harper Woods Public Library Director Kristen Valyi-Hax said. “They always have interesting books of a variety of types and genres. We hope people will come in and get a new favorite book at a bargain price.”

The sale will feature an assortment of fiction and nonfiction hardcover and paperback books, as well as books for children and young adults. Also for sale will be media, such as music CDs and DVDs.

“We do have some very high-quality books, and if people are building their own library, or if they need to find something in particular, like large print books for those who have trouble seeing, we have everything people are looking for,” Kingston said.

Those who purchase a Friends of the Library book bag for $10 can then fill it with books for free. The Friends of the Library also is offering a raffle for some fall-themed items.

“We have a raffle kicking off for a fall basket with a lot of items, like a $50 gift certificate to the Pancake House, a bottle of wine, a lot of fall decorations and more. We’ll be pulling the winners on Nov. 3 at the kickoff for the Artisans’ Market.”

The sale helps support a variety of projects that the Friends of the Harper Woods Public Library performs throughout the year.

“Right now, we are concentrating on hosting events and programs. We offer a lot of adult programs, like author visits, chocolate making, household cleaning products. We also are helping with projects such as re-covering the tables in the community room people use for programs, because they are getting kind of old and shabby. We help with a lot of projects that people might not notice right away, but need to be done, like that.We also purchase things like teaching aids, and help fund parts of the collection that may be aging or missing.”

The sale’s organizers are hoping that people will take advantage of what organizers say is a great opportunity.

“We hope people continue to pop into their local library,” remarked Kingston. “There’s a lot going on at the Harper Woods library, and I think people might be surprised at everything they can find there to enjoy.”
