Grosse Pointe Shores candidate forum canceled

GROSSE POINTES — A League of Women Voters of Grosse Pointe candidate forum for a contested Grosse Pointe Shores City Council race has been canceled.

The forum, which had been slated to take place Oct. 7 at The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe Farms, was canceled last week after three of the four candidates said they were unable to be present at that day and time. Susan Acton, the League of Women Voters of Grosse Pointe director of voter services, said two of the candidates were going to be out of town and a third had another commitment.

League candidate forum rules mandate that they must have at least two candidates present to conduct a forum.

“It is unfortunate,” Acton said of the cancellation.

Because the league already had a large number of other forums for contested races in the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods — there are contested mayoral and/or council races in all six communities — Acton said they weren’t able to reschedule the Shores forum. The last League of Women Voters of Grosse Pointe forum is scheduled for Oct. 22, and with no-excuse absentee voting allowed for the first time this year, she said they didn’t want to hold forums later than that because more people are expected to vote early this year.

However, members of the League of Women Voters of Grosse Pointe think it’s a positive sign that many residents are interested in running for local offices.

“We are happy that the elections are so contested in the Grosse Pointes,” Acton said. “We haven’t seen that in a long time.”

In the Shores council race, four candidates — incumbent City Council member Doug Kucyk and Ryan P. Case, Danielle Gehlert and John Seago — are competing for three four-year terms. Current Shores City Council members Tina Ellis and Robert Gesell aren’t seeking reelection.
