FERNDALE — A Ferndale spa is being investigated for human trafficking, according to police.

According to the Ferndale Police Department, an investigation was conducted with the Madison Heights Police Department on Tuesday, March 12, at Relax Spa, 751 E. Nine Mile Road.

Ferndale Police Sgt. Baron Brown said the investgation started after police after received an initial tip that the business was participating in prostitution.

“The investigation indicated there were multiple women who were possibly victims of human trafficking,” Brown said.

Though he didn’t say how many women were involved, Brown said that out of an abundance of caution and concern for the women’s safety, authorities don’t want to divulge any more information regarding them.

“We feel like the more (we talk about the women), the more danger they’re in and the worse their already horrible living conditions could be,” he said. “They were turned over to a nongovernmental agency organization that deals with this kind of thing, and the investigation is ongoing.”

Madison Heights Police Chief Corey Haines said his department was contacted by Ferndale police to discuss involving its special investigations unit, which is actively investigating human trafficking cases.

“Recently, we had an arrest at the Days Inn Hotel in Madison Heights (on Feb. 12),” he said. “They called us for our expertise investigating these situations, and we assisted them with their investigation at their spa.

“We know (human trafficking) is present in our local hotels and motels, and this is an extension of similar activity that is not only occurring there, but that we find is also occurring in spas and at local apartment complexes,” Haines continued.

Brown said the investigation is ongoing, and he declined to say more on the case. He also declined to say if anyone has been arrested.

A representative for Relax Spa could not be reached for comment by press time.
