SHORES — The foundation created by the families of Paige Stalker and Christina Samuel, two young women who were murdered for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, is hosting a fundraiser this week.

Save Our Children’s Future of Michigan will be at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, 788 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores, from 7-9 p.m. July 30 for an evening of chamber music with members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

The event will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Local businesses like Ahee Jewelers have donated items for the auction.

While the Foundation will bring in a small amount of money from the event after paying the costs, the real reason behind the event is to raise awareness, Stalker’s grandfather, Dave Lawrence, said in an email.

It seems to be working, since family and foundation members recently appeared nationwide on the show “Fox & Friends.”

“The goals of the foundation (are) to make our schools and neighborhoods safe for our children; not only physical safety, but safety from bullying,” Lawrence said in the email. “We would like to see a mandatory safety class … for all children entering seventh grade; first at the local level, then expanding to finally have a state mandate.  Others have expressed a desire to have this at other neighborhoods in the United States.

“From our meeting with citizens of Detroit and Grosse Pointe, we have found that people would like to have more neighborhood clubs, more block clubs,” he said. “But they need help, not just directions from the Internet, but actual assistance in forming the clubs, preparing the paperwork and working with their city administration and police departments.”

Samuel was 22 and Stalker was 16 when they were gunned down while in vehicles in Detroit in separate incidents within days of each other in late 2014. The incidents are still under investigation.

Their families describe them both as excellent students who had bright futures ahead of them.

Tickets to the fundraiser cost $50 each. They can be purchased online or at the door.
