GROSSE POINTE PARK — After being closed for six months for renovations, the Ewald Branch of the Grosse Pointe Public Library is open for curbside service.

The Ewald Branch projects were part of the library’s Space Needs Assessment. The completed improvements include interior furnishings and lighting updates; improved sightlines and safety at the main entrance; a new combined circulation and reference desk; improved acoustics throughout the building; and a new lounge area.

Quinn Evans, in Detroit, was the architectural firm on the project. McCarthy and Smith, of Farmington Hills, was the construction company, and the Detroit-based Roy Co. provided the construction management.

Because of COVID-19, library officials have decided not to open to the public just yet, but they are offering curbside pickup at all three branches: Ewald, Central and Woods. The hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

“The pandemic put our construction behind schedule. But the finished product was worth the wait,” library Director Jessica Keyser said in a prepared statement. “We’re thrilled at the transformation of the Ewald Branch. It’s more open and welcoming, has more seating, and helps us serve our patrons better. I can’t wait until we can welcome everyone back in the library.”

The branches have 40 different digital resources available, including e-books, music, movies, online homework help, ancestry.com and online magazines. Digital library cards are available on the website, grossepointelibrary.org, for immediate access to many library resources.

For curbside service, patrons can select the materials they want through the website or by calling (313) 389-6212. Patrons receive an email for pickup. Material is kept on hold for three days. Librarians are available to answer questions by phone, email at ref@grossepointelibrary.org or via the website online chat. In addition, children, teens and adults can register for online programs.

“Allowing the public into the building is a local decision, and we are prioritizing staff safety by remaining at the curbside level of service. We have been told by many patrons that our curbside service is a lifeline for them, and we are mindful that an outbreak among staff could interrupt that service,” Mary Ann Short, library marketing and programming coordinator, said via email. “Librarians are not eligible for the COVID vaccine in our current phase. We are advocating at the state and local level to change that. We are still following the same precautions of quarantining items and spreading out staff workstations to maintain social distancing.”

The Central Branch is located at 10 Kercheval Ave. in Grosse Pointe Farms. The Ewald Branch is located at 15175 E. Jefferson Ave. in Grosse Pointe Park. The Woods Branch is located at 20680 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Woods.
