Eleven boaters are safe after a packed boat capsized on Pine Lake in West Bloomfield on the Fourth of July.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a capsized boat on Pine Lake with 11 occupants in the water at 4:46 p.m. July 4.

A Malibu brand ski boat had been on Pine Lake when it was passed by another boat that left a heavy wake. The wake caused water to enter the boat. The occupants of the boat, fearing the vessel would sink, put on life jackets and jumped into the water.

The OCSO Marine Unit patrol boat, along with other boaters in the area, assisted in helping the occupants from the water.

The OCSO Marine Unit was able to tow the boat back to its dock.

All occupants were returned to shore, with no injuries.

The operator of the boat was a 23-year-old West Bloomfield woman. Passengers on the boat were three 23-year-old Bloomfield Hills women, a 22-year-old Farmington Hills woman, a 23-year-old Macomb Township man, a 24-year-old Taylor man, a 22-year-old Ann Arbor man, a 23-year-old Clawson man, a 23-year-old Bloomfield Hills man and a 22-year-old Plymouth man.

An investigation revealed that the ski boat had been overloaded by around 450 pounds at the time of the incident.

Alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
