EASTPOINTE — The Eastpointe Department of Public Safety is warning residents about a recent rash of crimes involving recent-model Chevrolet Malibu vehicles.

According to police, there were 11 incidents that occurred May 2-3 in which the steering wheel column and steering wheels were stolen from Chevy Malibu cars within the community. Department officials stated that they believe the steering columns and wheels are being stolen for the air bags, which can be resold, and the Malibu has a steering wheel column that is relatively simple to remove.

“These incidents occurred during the night, late morning hours,” Eastpointe police posted on Facebook. “The suspect(s) were able to enter the vehicles after breaking out a window. Once inside the vehicles, the steering wheel columns and steering wheels were stolen. If you see or hear something that you believe is suspicious, please call 911 so we can respond and investigate.”

They added that similar thefts have occurred in nearby Harper Woods, where 11 cases also were reported in the first week of May. Eastpointe police can be contacted at (586) 445-5100.
