Eastpointe police arrest registered sex offender for alleged indecent exposure at park

EASTPOINTE — A 63-year-old Eastpointe man has been charged for allegedly exposing himself to two young girls at Kennedy Park.

Police identified the suspect as Martin Wade Haskins. The incident in question occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. July 13. According to police, officers were dispatched to the park, which is on the north side of Stephens Road between Gratiot Avenue and Kelly Road, following reports of illicit behavior. Police said a suspect they later identified as Haskins left the scene in a tan Chrysler LHS.

Officers followed up on the vehicle and they arrested Haskins at his home. Search warrants were obtained and evidence was seized from the home, according to police. Police said that Haskins has a history of this type of behavior and is a registered sex offender.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, Haskins was sentenced in Oakland County Circuit Court to a minimum of 20 years in prison and a maximum of 40 years in prison in October 1993 for first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a person under 13 and second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a person under 13. He was discharged from the Michigan Department of Corrections in April 2019. He also served time for indecent exposure in Oakland County from 1993, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

On July 14, Haskins was charged in 38th District Court with two felony counts of accosting children for immoral purposes, and two misdemeanor counts of aggravated indecent exposure. The felonies carry possible four-year prison sentences and the misdemeanors carry possible two-year prison sentences. His bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety.

His next court date is a probable cause conference scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 27. He had not retained or been appointed an attorney prior to publication.
